Memorial for Carl Wood

Carl Wood of Battle Creek passed away Sunday October 2, 1966.

There is a group of horseshoe people in the WSHPA circles "the regulars". These are the pitchers, and quite often couples, who can be depended upon to be at nearly every scheduled meet. If any of this group are missing at a meet the others of the group do not rest easy until they learn the reason for the absence. This group is the hard-core of the entire WSHPA. They love the game and the people who participate in the game.

Carl and Ethel Wood were charter members of this group. Since the State Championships on Labor Day Weekend Carl had been battling a troublesome ticker. As he pitched horseshoes on an "ask no quarter - give no quarter basis", he also battle his illness. Carl lost the last battle and the horseshoe world lost one of its greatest competitors. There were probably only a handful of WSHPA who were not acquainted with Carl, or had the pleasure of his friendship. Those of us to whom he was near and dear have suffered a great loss and our sadness is deep.
