HORSESHOE CHAMPS - Jan and John Decker pose in front of a horseshoe stake. The couple has shared an interest in horseshoes for many years.

"It's a sport you would have to like, because you Will never get rich at it," John Decker said. The couple recently competed in the World Championships of horseshoe pitching. John won third place for the Elder's Division Class D at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Jan came in fifth place in the ladies Class E division in the week-long competition that began in early August.

Jan Decker said, "The second day I was in -third place. The final day I won three and lost two. I was just hoping I would finish better than the year before. That was the best I had ever finished. I wouldn't even go up and look (at the scores). John had to go and look."

John Decker also recently won in the Elder Class B State Championship during Labor Day weekend, said their daughter, Tracy Bobier. She added that her father was recently inducted into the Wolverine State Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame.

"We are very proud of, him," Bobier said. "It is something that he has enjoyed doing. Now that he - is getting some recognition, it's a very nice thing for him."

With all the glory the Deckers have gotten lately, that is not what interests them. John Decker said he enjoys meeting people at the meets.

CONCENTRATION - Jan Decker prepares to pitch a horseshoe. Her winning skills led-her to fifth place in Elder's Division Class "E" in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. People with a passion for horseshoes come from all over the world to attend the event.

"You miss that in the winter, when you don't see them," John said. "You are really glad to see them at the tournament when you go back."

The Deckers encourage everyone to get involved with the sport.

"It is good exercise because of the walking, bending and stretching," John said. "It develops good hand-eye coordination. The whole family can get involved in it. It's a good family sport - the majority of families are able to afford it."
