Area League of horseshoe players

San Jacinto-Hemet Horseshoes Began Tossing Shoes Near 1984

We think that the area league of horseshoe players came to birth somewhere near the 1984 season. Most of the records some individuate have kept don't really tell us exactly.

We can say, however in this the year of our Lord 2011, that ubaby you have really come home." What started out slow and easy but became fevered and fast and we now support a 100+ patrons on the courts each and even week, at 5 different locations for league play.

For the most part we are known as a senior league with most of our clients having attained at least the age of 60. It seems like every year we lose several "old salts" from the courts and it is getting might hard to replace them.

To give you an idea of just how senior we really are. I had a nice conversation with Vern Beaman of Sun City, (92) said he just could not play this year although he had intended to do so. Here is just a few of our old timers that some of you might be old enough to remember: Heading the list is one hall of famer (horseshoe pitching). Dean Zollinger, hailed from Sierra Dawn North and was a very avid "shoer" fan. A second hall of famer most will recall is Charlie Tatum, who hailed from Country Lake Mobile Home community for more than 25 years. We lost Charlie and his wife this year. I probably miss him more than anyone since we were almost inseparable for 20 years. Charlie and his wife Here both 94 years old and had been married for 72 years. A few others, just to round it out, will be: Carl Hiatt. Roy Williams. Bill Eaton, our snowbird from Canada for years. Bob White, Bud Peacock, John Hanneman, known mostly for his ability to hit the ceiling at least 10 times while pitching in our indoor courts at Sierra Dawn South, Carl Wall, Bill Anderson, Leon Paul, and so many others, I'm sure they are all teaching the angels in heaven the art of pitching horseshoes. - Derrill Miller

A little local action!

It was a beautiful day for Horseshoes on November 10, at the pits of Country Lake. 14 teams were present for 2 hours of pitching horseshoes and Camaraderie. Picture shows a small mportion of he more than 100 involved every Wednesday at the parks where we play.
