Promoter: Tournament Director for all tournaments held in
Winston Salem during the period 1948-1962
Encouraged Randall Jones to assume leadership responsibilities
for promoting horseshoes in the 1950's & 1960's
Assisted Randall Jones in directing tournaments held at
Miller Park during the period 1963-1968
Influenced Jack Springer, Recreation & Parks Director at
Statesville, to become involved in promoting horseshoes
in the 1960's
Served the City of Winston Salem by supporting recreational
activities during the period 1947-1978
Served as Recreation & Parks Director of Winston Salem
during the period 1963-1976
Served as Recreational Consultant to the City Manager
during the period 1976-1978
Promoted horseshoes and other sports with such vigor that
he worked 10 straight years without a vacation.
Designed specific instructions / details on how to build
pitching boxes and horseshoe courts in 1950. The designs
were also used to build the courts in Statesville and
throughout the Southeastern states.
Organized the Winston Salem Horseshoe Pitching Association
which was active in 1950's & 1960's
Organized and made arrangements for the funding and
building of the first 12 courts at Miller Park in the early 1950's
Served as National Chairman of the Amateur Athletic Union
(AAU) Horseshoe Committee which brought the national tournament
to Winston Salem on at least three occasions (1958 1961, 1966)
Served as 3rd. Vice President of NCHPA in 1959.
Wrote an article for Amateur Athlete Magazine highlighting
the 1961 NAAU Tournament held at Miller Park.
Presented a speech in 1965 at NC State University on
" How To Conduct a Horseshoe Tournament".
Served as an unofficial resale outlet for selling horseshoes.
The horseshoes were received on consignment from
Ohio, 50 pair in each shipment.
