Loyd Hathaway - born: 9/6/1896, deceased 1/29/1979



Promoter: Tournament Director for all tournaments held in
Winston Salem during the period 1921-1947.
Served as Recreation & Parks Director of Winston Salem during
the period 1921-1963.
Built the recreation program for Winston Salem to include
organizing, directing, and supporting horseshoes for a period of
42 years, (9/6/21- 8/31/63)
Personally responsible for getting organized horseshoes started
at the state level in North Carolina.
The pioneer for getting Winston Salem established as the first
hub for horseshoes in North Carolina.
Supported horseshoes by attending numerous tournaments after he
ceased to function as tournament director (1948-1963)
Always friendly and personally known by many of the horseshoe pitchers.
Hired Joe White in 1947 and was always supportive of Joe's every
effort to promote horseshoes.
Most dedicated man ever known by Joe White in the field of recreation.
Served as President of the North Carolina Recreation Society
Received the Fellowship Award from the American Recreation
Society in 1953
In his honor, the park off Anita Drive was named Hathaway Park in 1963
Great promoter of horseshoes during the period 1921-1963.
