M.H.P.A. Spring Meeting Minutes

March 29, 2009 1:00 – 2:42 pm

Meeting Location: Sky Lanes - Lansing, MI



Officers in Attendance: Doug Bailey, Roger Higgins, Ron Kohn

Ron Kohn called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

  1. Minutes for the August 30, 2008 Fall Scheduling Meeting, read by Roger Higgins. Motion to approve minutes by Randall Kamm; Mark Lankin seconded.
  2. Financial Report by Roger Higgins
  • Income total $4,586.00
  • Expenditures $3,268.14
  • Net $1,317.86
  • Account Balance as of March 29, 2009 total $4,666.17
  • Junior Scholarship Fund as of March 29, 2009 $1,895.02
  • Motion to place the report on file for Audit made by Steve Summerlin, seconded by Dean Schmitz Membership accepted.
  1. First Vice President, Judy Dennis not in attendance; no report.
  2. Second Vice President, Doug Bailey no Grievances at this time.
  3. Secretary/Treasurer Report by Roger Higgins
  • 6 new members
  • 3 Jr. Boys
  • 141 total members to-date
  1. Audit and Finance Report read by Bob Wells. He stated that the checking account was balanced and all receipts where in order.
  2. Chairperson, Dewey Howard was not present to report on the Hall of Fame.
  3. Publicity Chair, Mark Wolffradt wrote several articles for the Newsline and Ringer Report
  4. Statistician, Paula Summerlin; nothing to report at this time.
  5. Regional Director’s Report given by Steve Summerlin. Steve encouraged as many members as possible to attend the World Tournament. Dean Schmitz is relocating and John Tohmachefski will be taking over the St. Clair Shore’s Horseshoe Club.
  6. Ron Kohn reported on the State Tournament. The Taylor Horseshoe has 28 playable courts with lights, but still need some improvements. A review of the indoor tournaments will take place at the Fall Scheduling meeting.
  7. A vote was taken for the 2010 State Tournament; Kalamazoo 14 votes and Lansing 11 votes.
  8. A new program is being made available to the membership. It is called the “Accolades” program and you can purchase a plaque shaped like the state of Michigan to hang on your wall to “brag” about your accomplishments at tournaments. Plaques will be available from $25 - $40 with engraved name plate attached. See the website and the Ringer Report for details.
  9. Ron Kohn is running for NHPA 5th Vice President at the World Tournament. The 2011 World Tournament will be held in Cedar Rapids Iowa. The City of Grand Rapids C.V.B. has contacted the N.H.P.A. and Ron Kohn about hosting a World Tournament in Michigan in 2012. A vote was taken to support the C.V.B. in pursuing this endeavor. It was unanimous.
  10. Debbie Markley, Friends of Horseshoes; nothing to report at this time.
  11. Proposals/Constitution Changes, A packet will be sent out to the membership for review and the new Constitution/Bi-Laws will be voted on at the Fall Membership meeting.
  12. Motion to adjourn the meeting by Steve Summerlin; seconded by Keith Schafer.
