Welcome to the

2008 California State Horseshoe Pitching Championships

30 – 31 August 2008

The Southern California Horseshoe Pitchers Association (SCHPA) sponsors this year’s Championships and the Bakersfield Shoe Crew is your host horseshoe-pitching club.  The California State Tournament Bylaws and Playing Rules shall govern these Championships as follows:

Location:  Beach Park, Bakersfield, Calif.  The Beach Park is one block east of the 99 fwy at the 178 hwy east exits.  From either north- or south-bound 99 fwy, take highway 178 east to Oak St.; turn right (south) on Oak St. and go one block to 21st St.; turn right (west) on 21st St. and the park entrance is immediately to your right.  The road inside the park is one-way and circles counterclockwise.  The horseshoe courts are in the northwest corner of the park.

Eligibility:  Adult entrants must have played in at lease 3 sanctioned California tournaments from 1 August 2007 through 31 July 2008 (junior entrants must have played in at least 1 sanctioned California tournament).

Tournament Entry:  The entry fee for adults is $25 and juniors are free.  The entry fee and a completed entry form must be received by or postmarked by 1 August 2008.  See the entry form for the mailing address.

Tournament Format:  Tournament divisions for Open Men, Open Women, Elders, Juniors, Cadets, Senior Men, and Senior Women are offered; however, depending on the number of entrants for each division, the Tournament Committee reserves the right to combine a very small division with another logical division.  Each division will be divided into 10-12-player classes (seeded by player ringer percentage) with the highest ringer percentage class being the division’s Championship class.  Championship classes will play 40-point scratch games (the Cadets will play 40-points not to exceed 50-shoes games).  Other classes will play 40-shoe scratch games.  Any lower ringer percentage class with more than 12% spread will use an 80% handicap and play alternate pitch, 40-shoe games.  Most classes will play their games over 2 days.  Class assignments, pitching days, at start times will be distributed to players at least one week before the tournament starts.  Players must check-in 30 minutes before their start time.  Players’ game win/loss records determine each class’ finishing positions.  Ties for first are broken by playoff games.  For lower level ties, ringer percentage breaks ties for scratch classes and total points breaks ties for handicap classes.  Class results will be posted within 30 minutes after class play concludes and all score sheets turned in.

Scorekeeper:  Players shall pay volunteer scorekeepers $1 per player per game.  Players must validate their game’s score sheet immediately after play concludes and before it is turned in for results recording.

Awards Ceremony:  The awards ceremony for all classes will start within 60 minutes after tournament play concludes and will be near the horseshoe courts.

Player Attire:  While on the courts, players must wear shirts with their name professionally printed (at least 1-inch lettering) on the back.  No sleeveless shirts, tank tops, or open-toe shoes allowed on the courts.  Attire will be checked during player check-in.  Please do not rely on purchased shirts at the tournament because the vendor cannot guarantee timely deliveries.

Parking:  Parking is allowed on both sides of the park road, along 21st St., and the parking lot northwest of the horseshoe courts.

Concessions:  Various mobile food vendors will be available for most of each day.  For special dietary needs, bring your own food and drink.

Player and Fan Comfort:  Expect very warm sunny days and all attendees are encouraged to bring seating and shade equipment for themselves and to share with friends.

Accommodations:  The Bakersfield area has plenty of motels for your convenience.  Please consider the Best Western Crystal Palace Inn & Suites.  We selected the Crystal Palace Inn as our “host” motel for horseshoe pitchers because it is very close to Beach Park and it offers an excellent rate if pitchers book 10 or more rooms combined (see motels).  Even though Beach Park is not equipped with RV hook-ups, they will allow limited, free overnight RV parking on a first-come basis for Friday and Saturday nights only.  Please see the area’s RV information for more options.

Awards Sponsorship:  Please see the awards sponsorship form for directions.  All awards sponsors are greatly appreciated!  And, we greatly appreciate your help-soliciting sponsors.  NCHPA and SCHPA horseshoe pitching clubs, individuals, local businesses, or families of past players can use the awards sponsorship form to donate much-needed funds for our California State Championships awards.

Shirts and Caps:  Vendor information coming soon.
